Tenzing

Tenzing joined us rather unexpectedly on July 8, 2004. His mother, a rescue hedgehog who was staying with us temporarily en route to a permanent home, gave birth to a single hoglet late that afternoon. We, not knowing she had been pregnant, were quite startled but ultimately delighted! We decided the little fellow would stay with us permanently. Since our hedgehog Knarla was spayed in June, the issue of accidental breeding wasn't a factor, and Tenzing settled in and took over. This, of course, is what hedgehogs seem to do.

Tenzing's growth over his first few weeks of life was amazing. I was thrilled to be able to document the development of a baby hedgehog for Hedgies.com and the education (and entertainment) of others.

Tenzing may eventually move in with Knarla, as the two of them seem to be getting along quite well. For now, he is living in a bachelor pad in our living room - actually a 24" x 30" collapsible cage from Quality Cage Company complete with a bucket wheel, corner shelf for extra room, and a nice fabric hat to hide under.
